My name is Sarah and I am a readers’ services librarian here at TCPL. I order the fiction books, paperbacks and large type books for the Library. I create fiction displays in the Library to help expose people to materials they might not normally think of reading, and I create monthly thematic booklists on our website. This year I am also heading the Community Read, which partners the Library and Cornell University in getting people in the Ithaca-area to all read the same book that incoming Cornell freshmen read.
The 100 Book Challenge
I have created this blog to showcase what I am reading this year from January 1st until December 31st. My goal is to read 100 books during the year. During the last few years, many libraries in the United States have had their readers’ advisory librarians take part in a 50 book challenge, where library staff read at least fifty books and post what they thought of them on blogs. I have decided to try to read 100 books to make the project more interesting for me. I normally read over 50 books a year, although not 100 books, so this will be a challenge for me.
All of the books I will read and report on this coming year will be owned either by Tompkins County Public Library or available through the Finger Lakes Library System. I typically read mostly fiction, with an emphasis on literary fiction and mysteries. I am a huge fan of mysteries, with my favorites being British, Swedish, Norwegian, and Icelandic. A lot of my regular fiction reading is also by British writers. I also read a few classics a year, a couple of poetry books a year, biographies, compilations of short stories, and some history books, so expect to see nonfiction on my blog this year also.
My favorite writers are: Donna Tartt, Joyce Carol Oates, Ruth Rendell, Denise Mina, Ellen Gilchrist, Margaret Atwood, and Tom Perrotta.
